Unlike an artistic director, who is responsible for the creative identity of a theater company, the executive director’s job is to make sure the organization is stable — from marketing and operations to finance and community support sansha 202 pointe shoes uk sale. Down-to-earth and quick to laugh, Bielstein recently made time to chat about her love of the arts and the business of theater over a lunch of chopped salads and french fries. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. Q: When did your love of the arts begin?..

A: My mother always took us to dance when I was young and I always loved it, the strength and power of it. We moved a lot when I was kid because of my father’s job and promotions. I was in high school in Houston when I got involved with the drama department and I instantly felt at home. I found my people. I love the collaboration of it. When you build a piece of theater together, you become a community. Q: Do you ever worry about theater getting a bad rap with young people?. A: I worry about that for the arts in general. The arts have been removed from the schools mostly and many young children are never introduced to the arts sansha 202 pointe shoes uk sale. What will that look like a few decades from now? Certainly, like most arts organizations, we do a lot of outreach and we work in the schools but we can’t possibly serve all the students who are out there. I don’t understand why the arts aren’t seen as part of an education. Studies have shown that students who participate in the arts are better problem solvers and more participatory because it builds team work. There’s a real disconnect in our culture..

Q: How do you plan to reach out to new audiences?. A: I think the key is the relevancy of the program. We have to think about why are we doing this play here and now, in the Bay Area, at this precise moment in time. The themes and the content have to matter. You also have to overcome the barrier of perception that theater is expensive sansha 202 pointe shoes uk sale. We always have lower-priced tickets, $14-$25, available on any production that we do. And some of the work that we do is free. And the Strand Theater is a good entry point for people to get to know the range of work that we do. Right now, we are going through a strategic planning process to figure out what we need to do going forward to be aligned with our mission. We want to build up on the great success that ACT has had but also see what ACT needs to do to serve the community in the future..

Q: The company is undergoing a period of great change right now with a new artistic director, the Tony-winning Pam McKinnon, taking the helm at the same time as you. What’s that like?. A: It’s very unusual to have both positions open at the same time. I think it’s a great opportunity to really listen to what the community has to say. I can’t just step in here and already know what the community wants and needs. I need to discover that. But I think in the Bay Area, a lot of what is important is innovation. We should be testing the boundaries of what theater can be sansha 202 pointe shoes uk sale.

Q: Did you ever want to be on stage?. A: No. I have always wanted to support the work. I always wanted to be the stage manager or to work the lights backstage. The business of the theater is like no other business sansha 202 pointe shoes uk sale. When you think about it, we launch a new product eight times a year. It’s a hand-made art form and you can’t make it more cost-effective. The beauty and strength and discipline it takes to make it work are just astonishing. Q: What has surprised you about the Bay Area so far?..
