On Friday, in Program 7, the night was evolving into a splashy snooze. The new work by New York City Ballet choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, was the last chance for something significant to happen. Wheeldon is an erratic hitter, which he proved Thursday with 2010’s “Ghosts,” so there was little reason not to feel gloomy freed mini pointe shoes uk sale. Then the curtain rose on Wheeldon’s “Number Nine,” and the corps de ballet rushed out in electric yellow unitards as Michael Torke’s big modernist score boomed to a beat that seemed to cross Beethoven with a fandango. Was this another busy ballet, or one of the choreographer’s best works — something big and provocative as well as subtle and thrilling?..
As the precise, geometric interactions between the corps and the principals took hold and the dancers flew across the stage, the answer was clear: Wheeldon was in complete control of his material. He was the slugger who just might hit it out of the park Friday freed mini pointe shoes uk sale. And hit it he did. The wonderful spatial volumes of early modern dance, humorous Mark Morris drop-and-roll formations and Balanchinian attention to geometric, highly musical patterns were digested in “Nine” into a lush, electric work that kept the Opera House audience at the edge of its collective seat..
Part of its success was his use of the 16 corps dancers as vital players, not landscape, and the eight principals in dizzying orange and hot turquoise had to interact with and pull out of that electric crowd. Maria Kochetkova repeatedly shot through the stage with abandoned focus, and Gennadi Nedvigin transformed his impeccable gallantry into rock-and-roll freedom. Lorena Feijoo, Frances Chung and Pascal Molat also allowed themselves to fly freed mini pointe shoes uk sale. The company was in equally fine mettle in Wayne McGregor’s “Chroma,” which premiered Thursday. But “Chroma,” as compellingly inventive as it was, couldn’t deliver. The design by renowned architect John Pawson was sublimely clinical and spectral by turns — a ghostly white emptiness with a giant window in the backdrop through which dancers could come and go, alluding to vacuum-sealed science as much as to dream life..
McGregor gained champions in 2007 with “Eden/Eden,” a ballet about cloning. But “Chroma” lacked that same narrative clarity freed mini pointe shoes uk sale. The music by Joby Talbot and Jack White III, with its sudden allusions to pop songs and its forceful oppositional currents, pulled at the dance destructively, making the movers’ exquisite dislocations seem oddly pointless. And as vividly as McGregor’s movement tried to reveal our contorted relationships and disturbed inner lives, “Chroma” missed the mark..
But nothing missed the mark like “Underskin” by Renato Zanella freed mini pointe shoes uk sale. Touted as a search by three women in a soul-forest (rendered by designer Anne Marie Legenstein as industrial I beams clustered center stage), this pretentious work may aspire to be a modern-day “Giselle.” It isn’t. Sofiane Sylve as a kind of queen of the night was decked out in a dark, glistening unitard and danced endlessly portentous movement with the same passionate conviction she brings to the role of Myrtha in “Giselle.” Given her artistry and the sublime music, this made sense. Nothing else but the commitment of the dancers (dressed like denizens of a tame S+M club) did..
