Everybody’s always happy to see Dolly baby ballet shoes size 4 uk sale. The titular matchmaker and Jill-of-all-trades in “Hello, Dolly!” always makes a big entrance, and people practically swoon all around her. We’ve all heard the song. Now “Hello, Dolly!” is making a big entrance again in San Francisco, as SHN brings the national tour of the Tony Award-winning 2017 Broadway revival to the Golden Gate Theatre. The timing is poignant, so soon after the death of the original Dolly, San Francisco’s own Carol Channing. This revival originally starred Bette Midler, and the tour brings us Broadway veteran Betty Buckley, star of “Eight Is Enough” and a Tony Award winner for “Cats,” recently seen on TV’s “Supergirl” and “Preacher.”..
This “Dolly” is looking swell. Director Jerry Zaks’ production is fabulous, with a sharp comedic cast and dynamic choreography by Warren Carlyle. At 72, Buckley mostly walks through the dance numbers, but some of the biggest applause of the night follows an acrobatic dance of leaping waiters, and rightly so. Santo Loquasto’s scenic design is superb, from the painted backdrops of 1895 New York to the beautifully detailed, grand and fanciful sets, and his period costumes are bright with plenty of bustle baby ballet shoes size 4 uk sale.
Cheery widow Dolly Gallagher Levi has been hired by Yonkers “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder to find him a new wife, but she plans to marry him herself baby ballet shoes size 4 uk sale. Meanwhile, Vandergelder’s daughter is running off with a struggling artist, and his two hay and feed store employees are playing hooky to see the sights in New York City while he’s out of town, and it’s up to Dolly to arrange a happy ending for all. With lively songs by Jerry Herman (“Mame,” “La Cage aux Folles”) and book by Michael Stewart (“Bye Bye Birdie,” “42nd Street”), the 1964 musical is based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play “The Merchant of Yonkers,” which Wilder rewrote and retitled in 1954 as “The Matchmaker.”..
Wilder had based his comedy on Johann Nestroy’s 1842 Viennese musical play “Einen Jux will er sich machen,” which itself was based on John Oxenford’s 1835 English one-act comedy “A Day Well Spent.” Tom Stoppard’s also adapted his 1981 comedy “On the Razzle” from the Nestroy version baby ballet shoes size 4 uk sale. As the title implies, it’s Wilder’s “Matchmaker” rewrite that brought the supporting character of Dolly into the foreground. Buckley has plenty of impish charisma as Dolly, at home in the spotlight. She has a number of superbly timed comedic reactions, drawing the moment out beautifully for maximum hilarity. Sounding a bit hoarse on opening night, she nonetheless belted out big numbers forcefully..
The only trouble is (if it can even be called trouble) that the clever and resourceful Dolly gets scant opportunity to be the life of the party because there’s so much life in it already. Lewis J. Stadlen is an amusingly exasperated curmudgeon as Vandergelder, and Morgan Kirner’s wails of distress are priceless as his spoiled daughter Ermengarde. This revival restores Vandergelder’s rollicking Act Two opener “Penny in My Pocket,” originally cut for time when the show first went to Broadway baby ballet shoes size 4 uk sale.
